Shows a lot of promise, but needs work
UPDATE: Feb 23, 2016
Ah, yet another pointless update. The total description on todays update was... (drumroll please)... "Various bug fixes." As I feared, the developer seems to be releasing fairly regular "updates" in order to make it look like things are happening, but no actual improvements are ever being released. I believe theyre just trying to buy time. What a shame. The first time I ever tried this app, I had very high hopes for its future. But now its clear that theres no point waiting any longer. Thats too bad, because theyre going to lose a lot of customers in the process.
UPDATE: Jan 7, 2016
Well, sadly it looks like this app is not going to receive the kind of aggressive development that we had all hoped for. They do release updates regularly, but they contain nothing of value at all... just "invisible bug fixes." After a while, it gives you the feeling that the developers are stringing us along and providing these pointless updates just to "say" that they update it regularly. But if no substantial updates arrive soon, I will be forced to move on. Others will too. Come on guys, its time to take this app to the next level!
ORIGINAL REVIEW:
This is a well-designed app that has clearly had a lot of thought put into it. It is missing some very important features, but it shows a lot of promise.
It really needs:
- iCloud sync (I could never commit my entire life of tasks and appointments to an app that didnt sync to iCloud and my others devices)
- An iPad version
- Location-based alerts. Not sure I could ever live without that anymore.
- No alarms are imported from your iCal events, so just be aware of that. You will have to re-enter them all manually.
- Speaking of that, why not allow us to set a default reminder time in the Settings that will automatically be applied to all new events? I always add a 30-minute alarm reminder to every appointment so I dont miss it. This would save huge amounts of time when creating new appointments.
- It shouldnt make you go back into a task after you create it just to be able to add repeating options, start & end dates, alarms, etc., or to turn an item into a checklist and add the actual items. Why not give us the ability to edit everything we need to while creating a task? Just include a "More" button or something like that while creating a task that we can tap on if we do want to add additional settings.
- Not sure why it puts certain tasks in a tiny green font about half the size of the other fonts. The different color is fine to indicate the type of task, but having the font that small makes it too easy to overlook.
- I hate always having to reach to the very top of the screen to add a task or select filters, especially on the larger screens of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. Just using this app for the past week has exhausted me from having to constantly reach up to the top for everything. Why not allow the bottom "Plan / Act / Done" row to slide out of the way, revealing additional options underneath? Or make those buttons a little narrower and include a big "+" button (to quickly add new items) and a tags filter button on the lower right side.
- The same is true within all the other screens. The "swipe from left edge" feature has been available for years in iOS which lets you quickly return to the previous page. Please implement this throughout Glass. Having to always tap that little back arrow in the top left to go back a screen is so annoying, especially on the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus! It makes it impossible to use Glass with one hand.
- I dont understand why this app will not import any subscribed calendars like US Holidays or your Birthdays calendar from iCal. Not being able to see special days when planning tasks and events is a nightmare.
- Creating checklists is easy, but deleting a checklist item is a pain. We shouldnt have to put the cursor in the field and tap tap tap the backspace key until we erase all the text. Why not just let us swipe any checklist item and choose to delete it?
- Give us a setting to have our "Someday" items hidden from the Act view if we choose. Having all my someday items cluttering up that screen distracts me from focusing only on what I need to do today.
Adding these enhancements would put this app in a whole new category of user-friendliness, and I would gladly bump up my rating to 5 stars. Im hoping Glass has a bright future!
